Bon Iver is my new favorite artist… I am wondering how I never found out about him until now.
To backtrack, last week I stumbled across a different version of a song I already knew and loved, while listening to the best independent radio station around these parts. You can read all about it, here.
At any rate, I decided to check out this other band, Bon Iver (thinking they were some old-timey singer from the 30s, or 60s possibly – folk efforts can be hard to distinguish). Lo, and behold, Bon Iver is actually a current artist, and the song I love, “Skinny Love” is off the 2007 album, For Emma, Forever Ago.
I was completely blown away when I read the story of the album’s creation and recording. Apparently, after a relationship breakup, a band breakup, and suffering from a long illness, Justin Vernon spontaneously moved to a cabin in Wisconsin. While there, he started working on music, and eventually recording it by himself. He played all the instruments, and repeatedly overdubbed the recordings, which give the album its unique (somewhat old-timey, folky) sound.
His second self-titled album was released this year. (PS. The name Bon Ivar is a misspelled version of the french greeting “good winter!”) I am really impressed with unique artists like this who carve their own path. And I guess I know what I will be listening to for the coming winter!
