Movies: Much Ado About Nothing

The new adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic Much Ado About Nothing  is an absolutely brilliant take on the story by Joss Whedon.

A few things you should know going in:

– The whole things is set in modern day, which work surprisingly well when the Prince and his warriors are re-cast as a politician and his campaign advisers spending the weekend at a wealthy donor’s fund-raising event.

– The original text of the play is left largely intact.

– The whole movie is in black and white. For some reason, it actually really helps to smooth to the time-period by making everything look classic.

Okay – I have held it in long enough! Allow me to nerd out just a bit:

Joss Whedon, Joss Whedon…. Joss Whedon! What would this world be without the amazing talent of Joss Whedon? Every sci-fi / nerd girl/ super hero fan in the world knows Joss Whedon for his sci-fi, superheroes, anti-heroes, super-villans, and supernatural creatures works.

For him to take on Shakespeare is something of a departure. But anyone who is really familiar with the works of Joss Whedon also knows he does tongue-in-cheek very very well. This movie is no exception.

Any Whedon geeks will also recognize quite a few of his favorite actors in leading roles, including Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Tom Lenk, and Nathan Fillion (who steals the show!).

No matter whether you are a Whedon geek, Shakespeare nerd, or just movie fan, go see this!
